PREAMBLE

Black Legal Action Centre (BLAC) is committed to protecting the privacy of individuals who access and use Black Justice Hub ( “Hub” or “Platform”)

The Hub is an educational resource platform operated by Black Legal Action Centre to support legal professionals and social justice advocates in identifying, raising, and arguing anti-Black racism issues in legal proceedings. The Hub also supports public legal education, knowledge sharing, and law reform initiatives.

Use of the Hub does not create a solicitor-client relationship, lawyer-client relationship, or legal representation arrangement between Black Legal Action Centre and any Hub User.

Unlike BLAC’s legal clinic services, use of the Hub does not create a lawyer-client relationship and generally does not require users to provide information.

This Privacy Policy explains how information is collected, used, disclosed and protected when individuals access and use the Hub.

1. Scope

This policy applies to all individuals who access or use Black Justice Hub (“Hub Users”), as well as BLAC staff responsible for administering and maintaining the Platform.

2. Definitions

“Hub User” – Any individual accessing the online resource hub, including legal professionals, students, advocates, researchers, community members, and members of the public.

“Personal information” – Information about an identifiable individual as defined under applicable privacy legislation.

3. Collection, Use and Protection of Information

Black Justice Hub is operated by Black Legal Action Centre.

BLAC is responsible for ensuring that personal information collected through the Hub is managed in accordance with applicable privacy laws and this Privacy Policy.

Consent

The knowledge and consent of the individual are required for the collection, use, or disclosure of personal information, except as otherwise permitted or required by law. In order to be knowledgeable, BLAC makes reasonable efforts to ensure that the individual knows the purpose for which the personal information is being collected, used or disclosed, and that consent may be withdrawn.

The way in which BLAC seeks consent may vary, depending on the circumstances and type of information.

BLAC does not use or disclose personal information for purposes other than those for which it was collected, except with the individual’s consent or as permitted or required by law.

Access to personal information collected through Black Justice Hub is restricted to authorized BLAC personnel whose responsibilities require such access.

BLAC retains personal information in accordance with statutory or contractual requirements. Once personal information is no longer required, it is destroyed in a safe and secure manner.

Publication and Sharing of Anonymized Information

To fulfill its educational, advocacy, and law reform mandate, Black Legal Action Centre may receive, create, publish, or share case summaries, anonymized scenarios, statistical information, educational materials, and other content through Black Justice Hub.
